Member Portal and Mobile App for a Trade Group
HDP User Group runs research projects and meetings for a global membership. We rebuilt its member platform, automated Webex and Teams meetings, redesigned the site and built its app.
Overview
HDP User Group International is a non-profit industry consortium for companies across the high-density electronic packaging supply chain. Its members run joint research projects, share findings and meet constantly, across time zones. The website is not a brochure for them. It is where projects, documents, meetings and membership live.
We have worked with HDP User Group since 2018, across three projects: rebuilding the member platform, redesigning the public site, and building a mobile app. We still support all of it today.
The Challenge
When HDP User Group came to us in 2018, its member site ran on an aging Drupal platform that had been compromised. The organization needed a secure replacement, and it could not lose what was on the old one: member accounts, years of research projects, events and documents.
The needs went beyond a website. Access had to follow membership: which company a person works for, which projects they belong to, and what role they hold. Meetings for members around the world had to be scheduled, announced and joined without staff setting up every call by hand. And members wanted their meetings and projects on their phones.
What We Built
A new member platform, with nothing lost
We rebuilt the site on WordPress and migrated the old platform's users, including their existing passwords, along with research projects, project events and documents. The new platform launched in 2019.
Membership that follows the company
Registration with approval, automatic approval for people with a member company's email domain, company management for each member company's key contact, and member profiles with their subscriptions, projects, favorites and calendar.
Research project management
Active, completed and proposed projects, each with its own pages for the idea, implementation and documents, a project calendar, subscriptions, and editing rights for the project facilitator.
A document library with the right access
Downloads restricted by role, published papers and final reports that can be released when ready, favorites, and a way to send large files to a project facilitator.
Meetings that schedule themselves
Member, board, staff and project calendars with recurring and multi-day events, reminders, registration and time zone handling for an international membership. Meetings on the calendar are created, rescheduled and cancelled in Webex automatically through its API, and Microsoft Teams was added as a meeting option later. Project and event mailing lists stay in sync with the website.
A 2023 redesign
A new home page, navigation and style guide, refreshed pages for projects, policies, annual reports and brand guidelines, and a mobile-friendly layout, launched with redirects from the old pages.
The HDP App for iOS and Android
A React Native app, released in 2024, that signs members in with their website accounts and shows their meetings by day or week, with search, a join link and sync to the phone's calendar. Members can browse and join active projects and receive notifications.
Results
- A secure member platform that replaced a compromised one, with members, projects and documents carried over.
- Meetings for a global membership created in Webex or Teams from the calendar, without manual setup.
- Members reach their meetings and projects on the website or in the HDP App.
- Eight years of continuous support, with updates and a site health review every month.
